The TIE stands for Twin Ion Engines. Sometimes referred to as 'eyeballs' since they appear a bit like winged eyes. 

Built by the Sienar Fleet Systems, they are 7.2 meters long and 6.7 meters wide and 8.8 meters tall.

They can reach high speeds and have great maneuverability. They have ionization reactors, sensors, high level navigation systems and 2 laser cannons, and a distress beacon. 

Their hulls are made of titanium and they only have space for 1 pilot and no passengers.
