"BEHIND THE CAMERAS!"

G

ood morning, afternoon or evening, inhabitants of the Galaxy,

Here is Steela Jackman, again to annoy her detractors with her presence and to help those on her side grow in wisdom and power.

And today I bring you a new section that will be published biweekly. My duties related to foreign affairs don't allow me to do it more often; but I hope it's worth it.

In this humble corner I am going to talk about anecdotes, creations and interesting facts from all the films of our favorite saga and today, how could it be less, I will start with what was the first of them all: 'Star Wars, a new hope' , released in 1977.

And I'm going to focus on some of its special effects, which many will say, pfff that is 'special', since many of them were very innovative for the time. It is considered that this film marked a before and after in the history of special effects, that is, almost nothing!

The three most used effects in this film are: 'stop motion', 'chroma' and 'mate painting'.

The first technique, although it had already been used before (in fact it had been used 70 years before) was taken to a higher level especially in the scenes in which the AT-TAs were made to walk. This technique, for those who do not know it, is about taking hundreds of photographs 'step by step' and then placing them continuously and recording them on video; thus creating the sensation of movement.

The realism achieved still amazes me:

Another of the special effects, this currently one of the most used, is the 'chroma'. This effect consists of putting an object or person in front of a blue or green background and then placing the desired background using the computer. Easy, right?
Yes, but 40 years ago, was it just as easy? Well, I assure you that no. In those days, when computers were huge and the ability to randomize was very small, they did what they did with great effort.

And the last technique I want to talk about and which produced spectacular results is the 'mate painting' technique. It is about painting, yes, yes painting, on a transparent glass, the entire set of what could look like a huge film set to bring incredible scenes like these to life.

Yes, ladies and lords, that was not a set, nor a decoration, but a wonderful painting made by hand by great artists !!

I hope you liked the new section and that you have learned something new about Star Wars!
See you soon, galaxians!
