"Kylo Ren Kyber Crystal Question"

I was hesitant to bring this up to you all, but I felt that perhaps, in good consicience, I should do so. 

 

Even to this day, after all these years, the name 'Kylo Ren' is familiar to most people, for one reason or another. An either infamous or famous person from history, depending on your viewpoint. A person from an important lineage. 

 

But today, I bring up the name Kylo Ren because of his weaponry, rather than his deeds or parentage alone. Only a couple of days ago I received a panicked holo from a housewife on Jakku. Her husband owns a red lightsaber and while he was away, getting them some meat at the local market place, she was dusting the home and his lightsaber rolled off the shelf (where it was apparently placed) and landed on her foot, bruising it pretty badly. 

 

She is convinced that this was no accident, but a malicious action by the will of the lightsaber itself! 

 

This led to a lively holo that was remarkably long, but the core point was that she believed that lightsabers, and red ones in particular, were sentient and filled with much ill will against US who wielded them and that they had been responsible for many of the terrible events in history, especially Kylo Ren's actions. 

 

It seems far fetched, but I have come across a lot of strange things in this galaxy and in every wild story is usually a kernel of truth. For the sake of argument, let us entertain the idea that there is a certain level of sentience in the Kyber crystals. 

I could see how being ripped out of their homes and forced into a saber would be very unsettling and cause for some lashing out. 

But I also know many people who LOVE their lightsabers and whose lightsabers seem to work beautifully for them. In fact, Kylo Ren was pretty well known for his own weapon, if memory serves me right. 

 

Even the 'Ren' in the name 'Kylo Ren' was in honor of the Lightsaber itself, which was venorated and followed by the knights of Ren. 

So perhaps, if they WERE sentient to any degree, they might have different opinions among themselves. Perhaps it depends on the owners, too. Perhaps it depends on the type of crystal and the way it was obtained and how it is treated and used. 

 

Kylo Ren, from all the historical accounts, wasn't known for his gentle treatment of people and things, so it's likely that his lightsaber might have responded to that. 

But Kylo Ren, like all of us, was a little complicated and since we only have these distanced accounts, we can only surmise and cannot KNOW. 

So while this lady's fears gave me much to consider and look into, they are not anything to be concerned about at this time. I don't think her husband's lightsaber fell onto her foot on purpose. 

But if YOU have a lightsaber or are about to forge one - perhaps you may consider treating with an extra ounce of respect . . . just in case?
